Shepton Mallet Prison
All you need to know about a
ghost hunt at Shepton Mallet Prison...
HMP Shepton Mallet closed it’s doors for the final time in 2013 and was the oldest prison in England. Formerly a category C prison, Shepton Mallet has housed many of the country’s most dangerous criminals including the Kray twins in the 1950’s. When the prison was built in 1625 it started out as a house of correction and has a truly terrifying history.
There are records of some extremely brutal punishments being handed out at Shepton Mallet, and even the living conditions were horrific, as many men, women and children who were incarcerated here were left in squalor and starving whilst being held in small and over filled cells which were infested with small pox. There are unmarked graves all around the prison of former inmates who passed away here, some in very disturbing ways, including several recorded executions, however the full extent of how many executions which took place is not known.
During World War II, the prison was converted in to a military prison. There are reported executions as late as 1944 when sixteen Americans had been hanged and a further 2 shot by the firing squad for crimes including murder and rape. This is an extremely intense location for a ghost hunt and not for the feint hearted.
There are endless reports of spirit activity all over the prison with witness stating that they have seen cell doors opening and closing by themselves, the sounds of growling and groaning right in peoples ears, screaming, shouting and the cries of pain are heard regularly here. People report being touched and pushed or having their hair pulled by unseen hands as well as sensing some of the most unwelcoming feelings they have ever encountered. It is also not uncommon for visitors to become over whelmed with emotions as they sense some of the anguish and pain that some of the former and departed prisoners share with them.
This is one location NOT TO BE MISSED, but certainly one that’s only for the brave.
